EMTs and Paramedics are trained professionals who respond to emergency medical situations, such as car accidents, fires, or injuries occurring in homes or workplaces. Most people assume that an EMT is a Paramedic, but this is not the case. EMTs are classified in levels, depending upon their degree of training.

The EMT-Basic represents the first component of the emergency medical technician system. An EMT-Basic is trained in advanced first aid and CPR

The EMT-Intermediate has more advanced training that allows the administration of intravenous fluids, some pharmacological interventions, and the use of advanced airway techniques and equipment.

EMT-Paramedics provide the most extensive pre-hospital care. In addition to carrying out the procedures already described, paramedics may administer drugs orally and intravenously, interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs), perform endotracheal intubations, use manual defibrillators/cardiac monitors, and other complex equipment.

Most opportunities for EMTs and paramedics are found in the pre-hospital setting, such as a Ground or Air Ambulance Services. However, EMTs are now being used in Hospitals, Clinics, Physician Office’s, Amusement Parks, and Sleep Centers ….. The list goes on and on. The field of pre-hospital medicine is growing by leaps and bounds. Opportunities will be best for those who have advanced certifications, such as EMT-Intermediate and EMT-Paramedic, as clients and patients expect and demand higher levels of care before arriving at the hospital.

Earnings of EMTs and Paramedics depend on the employment setting and geographic location of their jobs, as well as the individual’s training and experience. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual earnings of EMTs and Paramedics were $27,070 in 2006, with the lowest around $17,300, and the highest of more than $45,280. More recently, a JEMS 2008 Salary and Workplace Survey, conducted by JEMS (Journal of Emergency Medical Services), found the median annual wage for an EMT-Intermediate to be $27,588.00 (market range is from $25,587.37 to $30,863.54), and Paramedics with a median annual wage of $37,699.78 (market range is from $32,909.29 to $41,809.34).
