Pharmacy Technology Diploma

Pharmacy Technicians

Pharmacy technicians help licensed pharmacists provide medication and other healthcare products to patients. Technicians usually perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication for patients, such as counting tablets and labeling bottles. Technicians refer any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist.

 

Pharmacy technicians working in retail or mail- order having varying responsibilities which may include:

  • Receiving written prescriptions
  • Receiving requests for prescription refills
  • Receiving prescriptions electronically from doctors' offices
  • Verifying information on prescription for completeness and accuracy
  • Establishing and maintaining patient profiles
  • Preparing insurance claim forms
  • Stocking and taking inventory

Pharmacy technicians preparing prescriptions by:

  • Retrieving
  • Counting
  • Pouring
  • Weighing
  • Measuring
  • Preparing the Label
  • Selecting proper containers
  • Affixing the prescription and auxiliary labels to the container
  • Pricing and filling prescriptions (must be checked by pharmacist before given to patient)

In hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted-living facilities technicians may:

  • Read patient charts
  • Prepare and deliver medication to patients (must be checked by pharmacist before delivery to patient)
  • Records information about medication in patient profile
  • Assemble 24-hour medication supply for patients
