EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING OUTLOOK:
Employment of law enforcement personnel is expected to increase on the same average as other occupations through the next few years due to an increase in population and police protection needs. A more security-conscious society and growing concern in drug-related crimes should contribute to an increasing demand for police services.
The opportunity for public service through law enforcement is attractive to many. The job frequently is challenging and involves many responsibilities. Because of attractive salaries and benefits, the number of qualified candidates generally exceeds the number of job openings in many federal agencies and some state and local police departments--resulting in increased hiring standards and selectivity by employers. Competition is expected to remain keen for higher paying jobs in larger police departments. Persons having college training in law enforcement should have the best opportunities. Opportunities will be best in communities whose departments are expanding and are having difficulty attracting an adequate supply of police officers.
